Sprints newest 4G enabled smartphone was released yesterday, the Samsung Epic 4G. I’ve been using it for two days now and it has defiantly replaced my HTC EVO 4G.

Today Sprint announced the availability and price for the upcoming Samsung Intercept.

In addition to the 3.2-inch, touch-screen display, 3.2 MP camera and video, and full slide-out QWERTY keyboard, Samsung Intercept comes preloaded with social apps and one-touch picture posting to the top social sites.

Customers can purchase Samsung Intercept starting July 11 through all Sprint channels… Retail pricing will be just $99.99 (excluding taxes) after a $100 mail-in-rebate with a two-year service agreement on a new line activation or eligible upgrade.

Sprint followed suite with every other carrier. Sprint has named the Samsung Galaxy S Pro to the Samsung Epic 4G. No word on price or on release date. I think we’ll be getting more information soon.

So you have an old laptop but you’ve upgraded your wireless network to the new standard, Wireless N. You now have this nice Wireless N network and you get great range but the speed just isn’t what you thought it would be. The problem is Wireless G can slow down a Wireless N network when you’re using a single band router. To fix this either purchase a dual band router.

I fixed this by purchasing a WiFi N card for my aging laptop. I have an old Dell Latitude D610 that I still use as my main mobile machine.

The items needed.

1. The Laptop.
2. The Wifi Card.
3. The Screw Driver

I’m using a TP-LINK TL-WN861N Wireless N Mini PCI card I bought off of Amazon.com

My D610. The Beginning

My wireless card is under my keyboard. Some cards are on the bottom of some laptops.
To get to the the card I need to remove the keyboard. To remove the keyboard, this piece of plastic with buttons on needed to be removed.

Now the keyboard has been removed.

Wireless card is removed by pulling the claps away from the card.

My new and improved Wireless N card.

To seat the wireless card you slide the card in the slot at an angle then pull out from the slot at that angle.

Antennas attached to the new card.

The antennas are attached by just pressing them onto the antenna connections WITHOUT bending the connectors and pins.

Reattach the keyboard and screw it back into place.

Then reattach the plastic thingy. And then.

You’re done.

Sprint today tweeted a couple of interesting items.

The HTC EVO 4G will be getting Android 2.2 but who didn’t already know that.

What’s intresting is the fact that neither the Moment or the Hero will be getting it. Apparently the Samsung Moment and the HTC Hero for Sprint don’t carry the necessary hardware to run FroYo.

One of the known upcoming Android phones for Sprint is the Samsung Galaxy S Pro, which most likely be renamed to something different if you believe Sprint will be following the lead of both T-Mobile and AT&T. Both carriers renamed their Galaxy S. T-Mobile is calling the Galaxy S the Samsung Vibrant and AT&T is going to call it the Samsung Captivate.

Another known upcoming phone is the Motorola i1 which is going to run Android 1.5, if you believe Motorola’s website. Hopefully this will be one of those devices released with 2.1 or even 2.2.

A question I pose, will the Galaxy S Pro require the $10 a month superphone fee? Will the fee become the norm on upcoming major smartphones?

Everyone that’s seriously into Android/Evo 4G has heard that some very talented hackers/developers have gained root access on the still unreleased device. You probably also know that they were waiting to release instructions until it was as easy to gain as possible. That time has come.

At 3am, this very morning, toastcfh of XDA-Developers forums updated the thread he started May 28th. His update included the instructions and download locations for everything you need to root your EVO 4G. Whether you got it at Google I/O, bought it on Craigslist, or are getting it the VERY near future you’re happy to at least see the instructions. The thread now at 39 pages long, is a very good read even if you have no intention of rooting your phone.

Some things root on the Evo won’t be able to do

1. 1. 1. 1. - you can’t write to /system or recovery while you’re booted into Android
         2. - you can’t flash a custom recovery to the phone

Since this phone already has root and has the ability to install various wireless tethering apps, how well will Sprints new mobile hot spot add-on do? Only time will tell.

Don’t want to pay the extra 30 bucks a month for the EVO 4Gs mobile hotspot feature but would still love to teather? Well there are many, many options out there. We’re going to take a look a few of them here.

First we’re going to talk about the ones in the market.

PDAnet is probably the most well known. It’s also available on iPhone, Windows Mobile, BlackBerry, and PalmOS(not WebOS). There is a free version but it doesn’t allow HTTPS connections. A single license will run you $23.95 (on sale right now for 18.95). PDAnet does not require root or any hacks/mods done to your phone. Requires a program to be installed on the PC. PDAnet allows you to tether via Bluetooth as well as USB.

Next is EasyTether. EasyTether comes in a lite version which like PDAnet free does not give you HTTPS connections. Unlike PDAnet though EasyTether is just $9.95. EasyTether also requires a program to be installed on the PC.

Now for the wireless tethering options.

There is Wifi Tethering for root users. Wifi Tethering for root users is free but requires root AND a netfilters enabled kernel.

Barnacle Wifi Tether is also free with a donate version for $1.99. Barnacle unlike Wifi Tethering requires only root access.

The last one I’m going to talk about is the option I used for a few months.

AZILINK is free, works over USB only, has no restrictions, and is also probably the hardest one to setup. I choose this option because it was free and had no restrictions. It has a complicated setup that most people will probably not appreciate.

I’ve been looking for some accessories other then the ones released by Sprint, Bestbuy, or Radio Shack.

I know which ones I’ll be purchasing for my EVO. I’ll be getting the Full Body Zagg protector, already ordered the leather pouch, I already have a car mount holder. I’m waiting to order a battery until Seidio comes out with their 3500 mAh battery.

When I got my Samsung Moment I needed microUSB cables so I found a place that was pretty cheap and ordered 4 more cables. I keep one at work, one in the car, one at home, and one in my laptop bag. I keep my microUSB charger in the bed room.

Before I order the official EVO car dock I’d like to see some videos of its features. I will however be picking up the HDMI dock when I go to pickup the EVO on the 4th.

I currently have a 16gb Class 2 microSDHC card for my Moment which will probably go in my EVO. If it doesn’t seem fast enough I will have no problem spending the money on the Class 6.

I’ve preordered my EVO 4G and I’ve been lucky enough to play with one for a short time(one of the Best Buy employees at my local store has one).

Well during the time I spent trying to decide if it was time to retire my still newish Samsung Moment, a lot of research was done on the HTC Evo 4G and here it is all in one place. If you have been doing your research as well then you’ve probably already seen most or all of this before but I thought it’d be nice to make it easier for others.

4G

Simultaneous Voice And Data – This is a first for Sprint. Recently Sprint/Verizon have been getting flack for not being able to talk on the phone while being able to surf the web. This limitation isn’t new, it’s been around forever on CDMA networks. Now you can talk and use data at the same time, as long as you’re using the 4G network.

How fast is Sprint 4G on the HTC EVO? - Is 4G going to be that much faster? According to some test run in Texas…. Not really. It totally depends on the network conditions at the time of the test, your location to the towers, and so many other factors it’s actually not reasonable to take these test at face value. But it’s something to read and think about.

Software

Sprint Mobile Hotspot App - How easy is this going to be to setup? Apparently a 4 year old could do it. This is great news. This is one of the biggest selling points for myself. To be able to use the mobile hotspot feature for the EVO 4G you’ll have to dish out an extra $30 bucks a month. To me that’s a small price to pay. I’ve been using a cricket broadband modem for several months and it cost $40 bucks a month, so the extra fees will balance out for me.

The EVO 4G will not be getting a FroYo OTA update after the release. – Atleast we know that this phone will be getting the update. The update may not be coming right away but it’s coming. So many users are still wondering if their phone will be getting the update to 2.1 let alone 2.2. Coming from a Samsung Moment, it’s nice to know that the update will be coming. That’s a calming thought by itself.

The EVO 4G has already been rooted - Great. The ability to remove all the Sprint bloatware right after purchasing the phone.. Feels wonderful to know it will be possible.

Two way Video calling with Qik – Qik has partnered with Sprint for their Video Calling using the front facing camera.

Screenshots on the EVO 4G without the need for root – To take screenshots on ANY other Android phone you need root. For some reason this isn’t needed on the EVO 4G. Well that’s cool I guess…

Fring is first to bring video calling the Sprint EVO - Fring beat even Qik to being able to do Video Calling on the EVO 4G. At least it will be possible on launch with something. Hopefully Qik releases an update before the launch.

Yes you CAN turn off Sense UI – Like so many others I’ve never used Sense UI before. I’ve grown to like the stock Android experience, though I will be giving Sense UI a change before turning it off for good. From playing with the device and the videos I’ve seen so far, Sense UI might not be a bad thing.

Froyo coming to most 2010 HTC handsets by years end – Great. FroYo coming within 6 months? I’d say it’ll be more like 2 or 3 months. Remember FroYo will have native 4g support.

Multitouch on the EVO 4G – How does the EVO 4Gs multitouch stack up against others phones?

Micro HDMI dock for Sprint EVO heading to Best Buy – The HDMI dock will be at Best Buy at the time of the launch. Great. I need another impulse buy when buying a new phone.

Front-Facing Camera Shows Mirrored Image – this is a little odd to say the least.

Check out the speed of these 4 devices – This test done on the Google Nexus one w/ 2.2, HTC EVO 4G, HTC Incredible, and the Motorola Droid kind of shows the speed of the devices. What is showing up on the Nexus One should be coming to the EVO 4G and Incredible once 2.2 is released for them.

Unboxing – I don’t know why people love to watch these so much.

See the Specs – The specs on this phone are amazing. 1ghz Snapdragon CPU / 440MB storage / 4.3 inch screen / FM Radio / HDMI out / 720p video recording the list goes on and on…

Price / Release Date / Pre Order / Random

EVO 4G priced at $199 starting June 4 - Great price. $199 on a 2 year contract is very reasonable compared to some Windows Mobile phones with similar specs(if you could find one with similar specs)

EVO Pre-orders At Best Buy - No mail-in rebate needed. Free Plantronics Bluetooth headset also.

RadioShack Offering EVO Pre-Orders, But With An Incentive - $20 bucks for accessories? AWESOME.

Hidden $10 fee? It’s not hidden at all – Sprint is charging an extra $10 a month to have this phone. They say you will consume more data with this phone then any other phone. That’s a very good possibly with the front facing camera.

$30 fee for Mobile Hotspot – Yes. To use wifi tethering for up to 8 devices you will have to dish out an extra $30 bucks a month.

Coming from a different carrier? – Sprint offers a $100 credit if you’re porting a number from another carrier.

Flyers from “The Shack” for the EVO 4G – Some pretty and informative flyers from Radio Shack all about the HTC EVO 4G.

A “short” list of accessories for the EVO 4G – I, myself, am probably going to get the HDMI dock.

## UPDATES ##

Stores open early June 4th for EVO 4G with mobile hotspot loophole – Sprint is recommending “preferred” stores open early on June 4TH to allow customers to pick up phones before they head to work. (I’m sure everyone will get a lot of work done…..)  and Sprint has announced that currently you can NOT use mobile hotspot on 3g and it works only on 4g and they will not be charging anyone until this is possible.(sometime in July)
